Cloth mask quality is next challenge

Cloth masks have taken over the market. Largely due to shortages and compelling need, Etsy has suddenly become the top seller of face masks. Etsy, of course, is not a mask company but an e-commerce website through which small enterpreneurs can sell handmade or vintage items. This has turned what might be called the “fashionable mask industry” upside-down. However, as cloth masks become plentiful, and given their likeliness to be in high demand at least through most of 2021, more and more the issue will be cloth mask quality.

An unnecessary mask culture war

In some ways, this “mask culture war” isn’t surprising. I have long been aware that Americans and Westerners in general are often ambivalent about the public wearing of masks. So it shouldn’t surprise me that the act of wearing masks would arouse so much derision and resistance. But the negative reaction to masks is still overblown and unnecessary.

You need tips on wearing a mask properly

congerdesign / Pixabay Now that the Center for Disease Control and other health authorities are recommending that we wear masks to protect others and ourselves during the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people are wearing masks for the first time. With it being the first time for so many people, a lot of people are making…

Entering a new world when CDC recommended wearing a mask outside home

Engin_Akyurt / Pixabay Never would I have imagined when thinking about this blog that I would write a headline that said that CDC recommended wearing a mask outside our homes. This of course is not something I celebrate—it is a sign of how serious this pandemic is, an indicator of how many lives have been…

Advice re masks for COVID-19 muddled, misleading

cdd20 / Pixabay Let’s face it. The U.S. government isn’t exactly batting 1.000 when it comes to addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump Administration and CDC missteps led to costly delays in coronavirus testing that cost us a month in efforts to track down and contain the spread of COVID-19. The US has tested over about…

The coronavirus mask is a new–and alarming–fashion trend

geralt / Pixabay The coronavirus mask is something that no one wants to have to wear. A single death from a virus is tragic. A virus that has a reported death rate of 2%–roughly the same mortality rate as the 1918 flu pandemic that killed between 40 and 100 million people–is something to take seriously….

Industrial masks with a great seal

In my quest for masks that seal well to the face, I find myself abandoning the cloth based masks. A good seal to the face is important because it prevents air from leaking in from the sides. For those of us who wear glasses, seal is especially important because of the way glasses fog up…..

CNN article boosts WHO guidelines on average lifetime exposure to particulates

CNN just posted an article supporting the assertion I made in March about needing to wear a mask when the US AQI is above 41. I made this assertion based on the World Health Organization guidelines. The WHO recommends that the average lifetime exposure to particulates should not exceed 10 µg/m3. Neither CNN nor the…

it’s all about the mask seal, right?

As someone who wears and promotes the wearing of masks, I’m obviously a big believer in respiratory protection. Inherent in a mask’s ability to protect the air we breathe is the ability to direct as much air through the filter as possible. This means that the mask seal around the face is critical. But I’m…

WHO annual mean suggests lower safe air pollution threshold

In a previous article, recommended wearing a mask when the US Air Quality Index is at “Moderate” (AQI 51) or higher. But annual air pollution exposure is usually more salient than short-term exposure unless the air quality on a given day is seriously unhealhty. A recent examination of the World Health Organization’s current guidelines for…
